Spirulidae is a term commonly used in biology to refer to a family of marine cephalopods, specifically in the order Teuthida. These cephalopods are widely recognized for their characteristic spiral-shaped shells, which give them their name. The family Spirulidae consists of a single genus, known as Spirula, and is further subdivided into two species, Spirula spirula and Spirula australis.
Members of the Spirulidae family are characterized by their small size, measuring only a few centimeters in length, and are found in deep-sea waters across tropical and subtropical regions of the world's oceans. They are classified as mesopelagic organisms, inhabiting depths of 200 to 1,000 meters.
The shells of Spirulidae are highly unique in the animal kingdom, featuring a tightly coiled internal structure called a "pseudoconch." The spiral shape provides buoyancy and allows Spirulidae to maintain stability in the water column. Despite this, the shells are fragile and easily damaged, making them a rare discovery on beaches.
Spirulidae predominantly feed on small invertebrates, such as plankton, using their tentacles and beak-like jaws to capture and consume prey. They possess well-developed eyes and possess the ability to bioluminesce, emitting light to attract prey or communicate with others of their species.
