The name Mosasauria derives from the discovery of the first and most famous specimen in the Meuse River in the Netherlands.
Mosasauria encompasses a wide range of species, varying in size from smaller forms measuring a few meters to the largest species, such as Mosasaurus hoffmanni, which could reach lengths of 17-18 meters. These reptiles were well-adapted to marine life, with elongated bodies, paddle-like limbs, and a powerful tail for swimming. Their streamlined physique suggests that they were fast and agile hunters, capable of chasing down prey in the open ocean.

In the 18th century, several fossilized remains of a large marine reptile were discovered near Maastricht, a city in the Netherlands located on the banks of the Meuse River. These fossilized remains were initially misidentified as crocodiles. However, in the early 19th century, scientific examinations led to the realization that they belonged to an ancient reptile that was distinct from crocodiles and other known species.
