JDAM stands for Joint Direct Attack Munition. It refers to a precision-guided munition system that converts unguided bombs into all-weather guided bombs capable of hitting targets with high accuracy. Developed by the United States Department of Defense to modernize conventional munitions, JDAM improves the probability of impacting the intended target and minimizes collateral damage by integrating technology.
The system consists of a tail kit assembly attached to a standard free-falling bomb. The tail kit incorporates a Global Positioning System (GPS) guidance system with an inertial navigation system, enabling the bomb to be programmed before release for precision targeting. The GPS guidance system receives signals from GPS satellites to determine the weapon's current position, while the inertial navigation system estimates its speed, direction, and attitude. This information is processed in real-time to calculate corrections and ensure reliable guidance to the target.
JDAM provides increased accuracy and flexibility for various aircraft platforms, including bombers and fighter jets. The precise targeting capabilities make it suitable for attacking stationary land-based targets, such as buildings, vehicles, or enemy facilities.
